Diabetes is a condition where the person has problems regarding production of insulin or absorption of insulin in the tissues. In some cases, a pregnant woman who does not have diabetes might find herself exhibiting symptoms of the condition. This is known as gestational diabetes. This limited type of diabetes actually lasts as long as the pregnancy and is resolved a few weeks or days after the woman gives birth.

This type of diabetes can be detected through blood testing when the mother-to-be is around her fourth to sixth month. There is actually no other way of finding out if you have gestational diabetes except for blood testing. The symptoms of this type of diabetes can be mistaken as monthly pregnancy symptoms and the condition may be overlooked because of this.

Symptoms Of Gestational Diabetes

The symptoms of gestational diabetes are the same as the early signs of diabetes but they seldom progress to the more serious stage because the pregnancy only last nine months. Some of the symptoms include feeling excessively thirsty, frequent urination, drinking lots of fluids. Other symptoms of gestational diabetes are fatigue, nausea, yeast and bladder infections and sometimes blurry vision.

The Risk Of Gestational Diabetes

There are risks of complications when a soon-to-be mother has gestational diabetes. The complications usually involve the unborn child. These complications are chemical imbalance after the birth of the child and some growth abnormalities. A risk of having a low level of blood glucose may also occur in babies born to mothers with gestational diabetes as well as jaundice, low blood calcium and high red blood cell mass. The child may also be larger or smaller than the average newborns. Having a large child can lead to caesarean section birth or the use of instruments to extract the infant.

Women who have experienced gestational diabetes are more susceptible to diabetes later on. They may also experience a repeat of gestational diabetes with their other succeeding pregnancies. Treating this type of diabetes can be as easy as controlling your diet or taking medication prescribed by your medical practitioner. The medications available in the market today for gestational diabetes are safe for the unborn child and the soon to be mother.

The key to managing this type of diabetes is early detection and controlling the kinds of foods you eat. There is actually no great sacrifice to be done since this condition usually lasts until a few weeks after the mother has given birth. These precautions are for the safety of the mother and the unborn child.

Diabetes is a condition of the human body wherein the person has a problem regarding his or her insulin production or insulin absorption. This malfunction renders the individual with elevated blood sugar levels. This is actually the main symptom of diabetes. Other signs of diabetes may vary from each person but they are primarily similar and may or may not be noticeable immediately.

Other symptoms of diabetes are feeling hungry most of the time even when you have just eaten, unexplainable feeling of fatigue and unexplained weight gain or weight loss.

Type 1 diabetes was once called juvenile diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes. This is an incurable disease affecting the endocrine system, in which the pancreas doesn’t produce enough insulin to convert glucose into energy. Type 1 diabetes is usually diagnosed in young children or adolescents, but this condition can develop at a later age as well. This illness needs to be fully understood so the patient and family members can provide appropriate treatment and support. Type1 diabetes has several concerns and complications that may develop if proper treatment is not followed.

Concerns of Type 1 Diabetes

Although there is no agreement on the actual cause of this disease, genetic factors and the exposure to certain viruses seem to play a large part. Since there is no cure for Type 1 diabetes, the patient must learn to handle the effects of this disease on a daily basis. That means monitoring the blood sugar level and taking the correct dose of insulin. If this is not done, the body will start to have adverse reactions. The first sign may be increased thirst and frequent urination because the surplus sugar in the body causes fluid to be pulled away from healthy tissues. There may also be blurred vision since fluid is taken from the lens of the eyes as well. An excessive hunger may be experienced because without the necessary insulin in the body, the muscles and organs lack the energy they need to function. This, in turn, triggers a hunger as the body calls for more food in an attempt to recapture the lost energy. Weight loss may result if the blood sugar isn’t regulated and the fat stores in the body are used to supply energy.

Complications of Type 1 Diabetes

The complications of Type 1 diabetes can be short-range or long term. Short-term complications must be treated immediately because they present the possibilities of seizures or a coma. Hyperglycemia, or high blood sugar, can occur for many reasons like illness, overeating or not taking enough insulin. Besides monitoring the blood on a regular basis, urine should also be tested to watch out for increased ketones, which are toxic acids produced when the cells are starved for energy. Hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar can happen if a meal is skipped, there has been an increase in physical activity or if too much insulin was taken. All of these situations require immediate and accurate treatment.

Long-term complications develop more slowly but can create life-threatening situations. Type 1 diabetes increases the risk of heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure. Increased sugar in the blood for long periods of time damages blood vessels, which leads to nerve damage, especially in the legs. Type 1 diabetes can also interfere with the filtering system of the kidneys, causing irreversible damage.

Although all of this information sounds grim, Type 1 diabetes can be successfully managed and a person with this condition can lead a normal and fulfilling life.

Type 2 diabetes is the type of diabetes that commonly occurs in people. In this condition, our pancreas most likely do not produce as much insulin necessary for our body or our body’s cells do not recognize the insulin created by our pancreas. Insulin is necessary for us to move because it is the substance that brings the glucose to the cells. If the insulin malfunctions, glucose builds up in our blood and is not distributed to our cells. Our cells will be starved without glucose thus creating problems for our body in the form of disease and sicknesses.

Complications Of Type 2 Diabetes

Having type 2 diabetes can result to complications that affect our heart, our nerves, our kidneys and our eyes. These conditions may be due to a combination of type 2 diabetes and hypertension. The glucose in our blood stream eventually builds up in the arterials walls causing the arteries and blood vessels to narrow and restrict blood flow. This can result to heart disease, heart attacks or strokes.

Signs Of Type 2 Diabetes

Type 2 diabetes can be easily noticed if you are vigilant regarding the symptoms of diabetes. These signs of type 2 diabetes include extraordinary feeling of thirst, frequent urination, frequent drinking of fluids, fatigue, blurry vision, numbness or tingling sensation of the extremities and many others. Some of the early signs of type 2 diabetes are difficult to notice because they are not unusual.

Usually, the very first symptom of type 2 diabetes is an elevated blood sugar level. You can monitor your blood sugar level by testing your blood. The test just requires a small amount of blood to be placed in a device to measure your blood sugar level. Your blood sugar level has no visible effects so you must be vigilant regarding other symptoms. Since glucose in the blood is impossible to detect unless you are tested for it, you might want to submit yourself to testing yearly to be able to monitor your blood sugar better.

People affected by type 2 diabetes are usually those that come from specific ethnic backgrounds such as American Indians, Pacific Islanders, Hispanic and Afro-Caribbean. Nowadays, through interracial marriages almost anybody can have diabetes because most of us come from different races.

The early detection of pre-diabetes or diabetes can help you manage and control your condition. This will also help to prevent or lessen the risk of complications borne from the type 2 diabetes.

Diet for Diabetes

The components of a healthy diet for diabetes type 2 patients

Type 2 diabetes is a serious health condition that, if not managed properly, can lead to severe complications. A well managed diet for diabetes is essential to controlling this disease. Your physician may prescribe medications to help regulate your blood sugar levels, as well as medications that help protect your heart and kidneys. Understanding how to manage your diet can be complex. Here we try to put it all in plain language, to help you make sense of all the charts in the standard booklet of counting your carbs.

At first glance, it seems that carbs are your enemy. The usual proscription from the medical people is that you limit your intake of carbs to no more than 195 per day. The trouble starts when you see that two pieces of sandwich bread runs around 30-40 carbs, while one plain bagel is almost 50 carbs! If you’ve been a sandwich eater all your life, this is dismal news indeed.

What you want to do, to set up a healthy diet for diabetes, is to start reading those food labels carefully. When buying bread, look for whole grain breads. You’ll notice two things. Whole grain breads have fewer carbs and more fiber. Some newer brands on the market have added fiber, in addition to that contained in the whole grain flour. Whole grains are complex carbohydrates, which is a good thing in a diet for diabetes patients. Complex carbohydrates break down slowly, so you never get a sugar spike, whereas refined flours contain little fiber and often, more simple sugars.

To arrive at the total number of carbs per serving, subtract the fiber grams from the total carbs. Your physician or nutritionist has doubtless emphasized the importance of getting a sufficient amount of fiber in your diet. Why? Fiber helps keep your digestive tract clean and free of toxins, which in turn, helps protect your kidneys from damage. This makes the picture a lot better, in terms of what you can eat and how much, while having a perfectly healthy diet for diabetes management.

Don’t shy away from eating plenty of fruits and vegetables. When you see that a half cup of chopped onions has about 15 carbs, you may feel that you’d rather use up your carb allotment on that sandwich! However, when you picture putting a half cup of onions on a salad, you realize that a sprinkling appropriate for a salad probably adds up to just a few carbs. Not a big deal.

Most produce are heavy on the antioxidants too, leading to better overall health and packing a preventative punch for all of your organs, a definite plus in a healthy diet for diabetics.

Foods that are encouraged in a diet for diabetes patients include meat, poultry, fish and dairy products. This means that you can make a meal of a big juicy burger on a whole grain roll, loading it up with lettuce, tomatoes, a couple of sauteed mushrooms and a fat chunk of Swiss to top it all off, all for less than 40 or 50 carbs. Not a bad deal.

In a nutshell, it’s simple sugars you want to avoid. A single soda or candy bar can wreak havoc with your blood sugar levels. In fact, a healthy diet for diabetes can be a healthy diet for non-diabetics as well.

We all know that one of the leading causes of deaths in the country today is diabetes which sadly, affects a large percentage of Americans. On the other hand, some of us are also considered to be clueless as to what really are the causes of diabetes and that there have been many myths surrounding the issue.

To keep the record straight, here are some of the myths and real causes of diabetes so as to help us prevent ourselves from having it. Though some of these reasons may be unrealistic, it is best that we take a look deeper at what seems to be becoming a bigger and bigger health issue of today.

Sounds Baloney

There are different types of diabetes which automatically means that there are also different factors what cause diabetes. It is not really clear and there seems to be no logical explanation but some people say that one of the leading causes of diabetes is and infection with a specific virus or bacteria. Another reason that may seem unreal is exposure to food borne chemical toxins and exposure to a cows milk as a very young infant where an unidentified component helps in triggering our autoimmune reactions.

Of course, when you come to think of it, these said causes of diabetes may seem baloney and illogical. These are only hypotheses and there have never been proofs that were found to testify all these possible causes. Whatever the causes may be, the surest thing that you could do is to immediately get medical attention for proper diagnosis and let a health expert manage it.

Real Reasons

But, when it comes to medical and health talks, some common causes of diabetes is increasing of age, obesity, and physical inactivity. Of course, when you are not practicing a healthy lifestyle and lead a sedentary life, you become more prone to these types of diseases that often affect those people who have problem with their weight and being not physically active.

In other rare cases, some causes of diabetes include certain medicines, pregnancy that may lead to gestational diabetes, and any illnesses or diseases that had damaged your pancreas that greatly affected its production of insulin. Pancreatitis is one of the leading illnesses that is known to greatly damage your pancreas.

When dealing with this kind of serious health problem, it is important not to jump into conclusions and ask a medical professional to help you deal with it. Hearsays about the myths would not do you any good so contact your doctor immediately to know more about the disease.

Childhood diabetes is a problem that is not showing any signs of abating and is a condition that, especially the type 1 diabetes conditions is the most often found form of diabetes affecting almost all diabetic children that are aged sixteen and below. Most often, such form of childhood diabetes is due to the fact that in children so affected their pancreas is unable to make insulin and thus they are affected by type 1 diabetes. In such a condition, it is normal for the immune system to attack its own tissue and organs and in the case of type I diabetes it means that the pancreas is affected in that its cells that produce insulin get destroyed.

Affects Children Differently In Different Parts Of The World

Though childhood diabetes is not very common, it is known to affect children in different ways in different parts of the world and it varies considerably as witnessed when one considers that it affect forty-three persons per hundred thousand populations in Finland while in Japan the incidence is just three out of hundred thousand populations.

Nevertheless, in the preceding three decades, childhood diabetes has been increasing noticeably and for countries in Europe as well as in America, it is type 2 diabetes that has now begun to affect the youth and it could be also related to the problem of obesity that so affects those societies.

Childhood diabetes is just as much a mystery regarding its causes as it is in the case of adult diabetes though it is believed that it could be because of genes and environmental triggers acting together that help to cause the problem. In the case of childhood diabetes with type 1 diabetes, it has been found that family history does not play any significant role in the development of diabetes in children.

Childhood diabetes symptoms are also much like those seen in adults and they seem to take a few weeks to become noticeable and are characterized by thirst, loss of weight, tiredness, and also frequently urinating, and children would also experience pains in their tummies, have headaches and also develop behavioral problems. Thus, a doctor should check children who have a pronounced illness history or who complain of pain in their tummy that lasts for a few weeks, and if the diagnosis is positive, then the child must be referred to a childhood diabetes specialist.

The treatment of childhood diabetes may require hospitalizing the affected child rather than have a general practitioner take care of the problem, and it is common for a child with diabetes to require insulin treatment which may also mean having an individualized insulin routine that must be planned for the child by a diabetes team.

Whats more, it is especially difficult for parents to cope with childhood diabetes in their offspring though they must lend solid support to accompany whatever care is being provided by the GP, hospital team or even social services. And, this is especially important because childhood diabetes means having to cope with a problem that is going to last longer than is the case with adult diabetes.

Patients and their families are more important than doctors or medicines in controlling diabetes. Any junior laboratory technician can detect it in a flash, and pharmacies are full of medicines to keep it in check. Doctors can also tell on examination, if a patient is headed for a complication, and ward off the threat effectively. However, no doctor can play a day and night nurse for any patient, and deviations from prescriptions cost people with the disease heavily, sometimes even with their lives. Giving in to temptations in the presence of food and drink, laziness in following exercise routines, and forgetting to take prescribed medicines in time and at the right doses, are root causes of diabetes taking over life.

Individuals, who succeed in controlling diabetes in their bodies, reap rich rewards. They can pursue virtually any vocation, and children can enjoy full education benefits. This is sharp contrast with some other diseases such as cancer, which prevent people from leading lives of their choices. People with diabetes have climbed to the zeniths of their professions, including representing their countries in competitive sports at the Olympics. Women with the condition can experience normal pregnancies, and senior citizens can enjoy the best qualities of retired life. All it takes is the determination to follow the prescriptions of doctors.

No Time Limits in Controlling Diabetes

This is not like an infection which comes and goes all of a sudden: controlling diabetes comes with plenty of prior warning, though the risk never leaves your side. The type 1 variety of the diabetes is certain to stay for life, if it has been inherited, so there is no escape from daily medicine, and relentless controls on diet and exercise. The type 2 kind of diabetes is largely reversible, but it can return with a vengeance once excess calories creep back in to lives. You can never lower your guard completely!

Controlling diabetes is not a personal matter. The disease can affect productivity at work, cause fatal lapses of concentration, and be cripplingly expensive to contain, apart from the ultimate threat of death. Diabetes is a pressing public health issue, with responsibilities for families and for colleagues as well. The disease can lurk for years without anyone knowing, because there may be no tell-tale symptoms. Anyone who has not been tested in the last 12 months, is at risk, and threatens the security of others who depend on them as well.

There are many people out there such as doctors, researchers, and patients who are longing for the day when the news press makes the announcement that a cure for diabetes has been found. That day will surely be a day that will hold a lot of celebration as there are millions of adults and children who are praying that day comes sooner rather then later as their individual happiness is at stake. With the different medical researchers working on finding a cure for diabetes, you would think that it will not take much longer and the cure will be found.

But while the medical professionals and researchers have made great strives in the fight for a cure for diabetes, they are far away from the end. They have already spent years and billions of dollars on this and they are not done yet. It is a lot more complicated then any one person could dare to imagine and that is why every effort that could possible be put in is worth its weight in gold. The cure for diabetes should not be something that we are still trying to figure out within ten years from now. So the more help, be it volunteering or financial donations, that the different researchers and associations receive, the better our chances are of finding a cure soon.

How To Help

One excellent way in helping in finding a cure for diabetes is to spread the word. Word of mouth advertisement does so much more then anyone could possibly understand. While the diabetes association could still use your donations and personal time, if you help spread the word, you are helping them gain the help of many more people. The key is to get as many people involved as possible. A cure for diabetes does not have to be something that the medical professionals work at alone as we can all chip in and lend a hand.

While most of us are not scientists in any way shape or form, we can help by giving our support, love, and money to those who do have the knowledge to find a cure for diabetes. As many more children are being diagnosed with this each year, this is a disease that is affecting the future of your country, and of our world. By helping to fund the research needed in finding the cure for diabetes, you are helping in securing the future of our children and of our world.

Having diabetes doesn’t mean you are bedridden for the rest of your life. On the contrary, regular exercise is a great way to manage your diabetes. And exercise has other health benefits such as help keep your circulation going, your heart strong and your energy levels up. You dont have to become a triathlete in order to get benefits from regular exercise if you are diabetic. But you do need to have both your diabetes and exercise plans approved by your doctor.

Weight Loss

The most common type of diabetes is Type 2 diabetes, which is usually triggered by obesity and a sedentary lifestyle. That means put down the Twinkie and get off of the couch and go outside. Dont look at your diabetes as a curse see it as a warning sign to strongly motivate you to a healthier and less painful way of living. Managing your weight and your diet can greatly help you manage your diabetes. And exercise is inexpensive, varied and good medicine.

Attitude Of Gratitude

Best-selling author Dr. Anthony Weil has suggested that diabetes especially Type 2 diabetes may be an evolutionary advantage to keep us from eating ourselves to death. So, maybe with diabetes you are more advanced than other human beings. The fact you have diabetes can’t be changed, but your attitude towards your diabetes can be changed. That might be all the difference you need.

Diabetes and exercise work together to help try and keep you healthy, alert and active. Along with walking, riding a bike, gardening, swimming or doing household chores, you can find many ways of adding exercise to your daily life. Follow your doctor’s advice and do not exercise to the point where it’s painful. Take it easy at first and gradually work up to longer and longer periods of activity.

In order to help your diabetes and exercise plans, you need to eat a sensible diet, quit smoking and quit drinking. This will give you the energy you need to exercise, manage diabetes and get through the day. Eating more healthy foods takes a couple of weeks to get used to, but you can retrain your taste buds to like almost food. Quitting smoking will also help you taste your food a lot better.

Neither diabetes nor exercise is welcomed by the average person, but they needn’t be so dreaded. One is an alarm call, and the other is your road to recovery. Use them wisely.

Diabetes and pregnancy are conditions which need special medical care on their own, but concerns and risks heighten when they occur together. Every hour counts for the normal development of a fetus, and the process needs a continuous and steady supply of energy. High blood sugar or insulin resistance in an expecting mother delays vital processes for the budding life in her womb, apart from the risks which the condition poses for her directly. Doctors always respond with alacrity when a patient with abnormal blood sugar metabolism is presented, but the condition causes additional alarms in obstetrics.

Diabetes and pregnancy may suffer from special relationships. A young adult female, on discovering that she has diabetes, should try and avoid conception until her blood sugar is brought under control. Unfortunately, this is not always possible for women who do not undergo regular medical appraisals. They may suffer from diabetes and from some of its complications as well, and not know about it until they visit a doctor for the first time after realizing that they may be pregnant. There are others who may become diabetic during the course of pregnancies, and revert to normal blood sugar metabolism after they have delivered. Strict diabetes management is universally important in all these cases.

Who Pays for the Diabetes and Pregnancy Combination?

Unborn infants are most vulnerable to combinations of diabetes and pregnancy. A mother may also suffer from lasting effects, but at least she can learn about the dangers and take corrective action. No fetus has these options, and a number of serious abnormalities may develop as a result of a mother having unchecked levels of glucose in blood. The very successful conclusion of a pregnancy may be jeopardized by untreated diabetes in a mother. Everyone involved in the development of a new life and its birth has a vital role in containing the potential harm of diabetes to a developing fetus.

Expecting mothers and their care givers have to take rigorous precautions to avoid the coincidence of diabetes and pregnancy. It is normal to indulge an expecting mother, and there is much folklore about the foibles of women when they expect babies! However, no temptation to indulge in unhealthy eating, or slacking off from prescribed exercise and medication, should be tolerated in the interests of every unborn infant. The life of a pregnant woman can also be at risk if her blood glucose is allowed to remain out of control, apart from probabilities of harm to her fetus. No one would knowingly take such risks, but a lack of awareness of the potentials for complications due to poorly managed diabetes may result in risky complacency.

About 35 children in America are diagnosed with juvenile diabetes every day. For them, childhood will be a time of learning to manage a disease that has no known cure. Entire families are affected by a diagnosis of juvenile diabetes and there has been much research done to try to determine a cause and thereby eliminate this dreaded illness.

What is Juvenile Diabetes?

Juvenile diabetes, also known as Type 1 diabetes, is an auto-immune disorder. Basically, the function of the beta cell is destroyed, making it impossible for the body to produce the proper amount of insulin. Beta cells are responsible for creating insulin, which must be present to break down carbohydrates. This creates an integrated imbalance in the endocrine system with the net result being elevated blood sugar levels.

What Causes Juvenile Diabetes?

The most prevalent belief is that juvenile diabetes is triggered by an infection in a child whose immune system is already compromised. This view strongly equates the child’s predisposition to juvenile diabetes with heredity. Apparently, a child with certain genes will have an immune system that is set up to malfunction, attacking not only an external virus but specialized cells in the pancreas. These cells are known as islet cells, and it is within them that the beta cells are located. When the islet cells are destroyed, the function of the beta cells decreases or becomes nonexistent. Carbohydrates are not properly broken down and glucose begins to build up in the body. If this condition is left untreated, serious damage to the body will result, with the most extreme complication being death.

While researchers try to understand the causes of juvenile diabetes, several ideas have been discussed. Stress or environmental factors may trigger the onset of this disease, and some scientists even believe drinking cow’s milk may be a cause. Heredity seems to be the most likely reason why a child will be diagnosed with juvenile diabetes, although there are cases where one twin will have the disease and the other one won’t. Unfortunately, this disease has no cure, making the diagnosis of juvenile diabetes especially difficult. Those who have this condition must learn to regulate the body’s sugar levels with appropriate amounts of insulin. Daily monitoring of the blood has to be done, and special attention paid to diet, exercise and weight. There are many children that are waiting for a cure for juvenile diabetes, but until then they learn to cope with this condition through education and encouragement from family, friends and healthcare professionals.
